Democratic Party Sues Russia, Trump Campaign, WikiLeaks Over Election Loss

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) filed a multi-million dollar federal lawsuit in Manhattan court against the Russian government, the Trump campaign and WikiLeaks alleging that they conspired together to help ensure Donald Trump would defeat Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election.

The suit claims that Trump campaign officials worked with the Russian government and the Kremlin's spy agencies to hack into the DNC's computer servers and release the stolen information to the public through WikiLeaks.

"The conspiracy constituted an act of previously unimaginable treachery: the campaign of the presidential nominee of a major party in league with a hostile foreign power to bolster its own chance to win the Presidency."

The suit names officials who met with Russian representatives during the campaign, including Trump's eldest son Donald Trump Jr., his son-in-law Jared Kushner, campaign chair Paul Manafort, and campaign deputy Rick Gates. Manafort and Gates have both been charged as part of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's on-going investigation into collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russian government.

DNC Chairman Tom Perez issued a statement claiming that "Russia launched an all-out assault on our democracy, and it found a willing and active partner in Donald Trump’s campaign."

“During the 2016 presidential campaign, Russia launched an all-out assault on our democracy, and it found a willing and active partner in Donald Trump’s campaign,” said DNC Chairman Tom Perez in a statement, going so far as to call the alleged collusion “an act of unprecedented treachery.”
