Mitt Romney Announces Run For Utah Senate Seat

Mitt Romney, the former Massachusetts governor and 2012 Republican nominee for president announced Friday that he was running for the U.S. Senate in Utah.

In a video posted to Twitter, the former governor announced his intention to run for the seat held by retiring Senator Orrin Hatch.

"Over the last five years, Ann and I have spent a good deal of time with our 24 grandchildren. I've gone back to business, campaigned for Republicans and met with young people across the country," Romney said. "Given all that America faces, we feel that this is the right time for me to serve our state and our country."

Romney was the 2012 Republican candidate for president, eventually losing to then-President Obama.

The video points to Romney's accomplishments, both in Massachusetts and in Utah, highlighting his time with the troubled 2002 Winter Olympics Games.

A vocal critic of President Trump, Romney took a veiled shot at Trump over the immigration debate, saying Washington was sending "a message of exclusion" to immigrants and that Utah "welcomes legal immigrants from around the world."

"I've decided to run for United States Senate because I believe I can help bring Utah's values, and Utah's lessons to Washington. Utah is a better model for Washington, than Washington is for Utah," Romney said.
